Hip Hop Awards 2022: DJ Drama Crowned ‘DJ of the Year’
Veteran, hip-hop musician DJ Drama, took home bragging rights after social media-born comedian, host, and actress Pretty Vee presented the Philadelphia native with the 2022 BET Hip Hop Award for ‘DJ of the Year.’ Drama prevailed against half a dozen contenders, including D-Nice, DJ Cassidy, DJ Premier, Kaytranada, Mustard, Nyla Symone, L.A. Leakers: DJ sourMILK & Justin Credible, and the late DJ Kay Slay.
A very grateful Drama, who also served as the award narrator for the night, shouted out his family, daughters, and various members of his team, including his longtime collaborator, DJ Don Canon, and Generation Now signees Jack Harlow and Lil Uzi Vert.
He later gave special thanks to rapper Tyler, the Creator “for being the genius that he is.” Several years ago, Tyler manifested a collaboration between the two via a Twitter post a decade ago that came to fruition in 2021 with the release of the Grammy Award-winning emcee’s sixth studio album, Call Me If You Get Lost.
Drama thanked the “Lumberjack” musician for “bringing Gangsta Grillz back for another life.” “It feels like 06 again. I just want to dedicate this award to all DJs across the world. Listen, my only goal when I was a DJ was to get my name on a flier, and I’ve done some amazing things since then; sky is not the limit; sky is just what we stand on to reach the beyond. I appreciate everything.”
