Golden State Warriors Fire Mark Jackson
Mark Jackson's coaching tenure with the Golden State Warriors has come to an end. According to USA Today, Jackson, 49, was given his walking papers Tuesday (May 6).
"It's never easy to make a decision of this nature," Warriors general manager Bob Myers said in a statement. "Mark has accomplished many good things during his three years with the organization, including his role in helping elevate this team into a better position than it was when he arrived nearly 36 months ago."
Myers continued, adding that the Warriors remain "appreciative" of Jackson's "dedication and commitment since his arrival and are extremely grateful for his contributions." He gave no specific details about letting Jackson go, and would only say that, "as an organization, we simply feel it’s best to move in a different direction at this time.”
Jackson's firing comes after back-to-back solid seasons for the Warriors. The team boasted 121 wins in the last two years to mark their best regular season stretch in two decades. Jackson is one of only three head coaches in franchise history to push the team to a minimum of 50 victories in a single season.
"Mark Jackson has had a big impact on the improvement of our team and the success that we've had over the last couple of years," Warriors CEO Joe Lacob said. “Nonetheless, we must make some difficult decisions in our day-to-day operations of the club and this would certainly qualify as one of those examples. We wish Mark the best of luck in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions over the last three years.”
Jackson also helped lead the Warriors to consecutive playoff attempts, the second of which ended after a game seven loss to the Los Angeles Clippers this past Saturday (May 3).
Despite his work on the court, and support from the players, Jackson's position remained under scrutiny. The Warriors picked up his 2014-2015 contract option prior to this season rather than signing Jackson to an extended deal. The team must pay Jackson $2 million for next season.
Additionally, two assistant coaches, Darren Erman and Brian Scalabrine, had noted issues with Jackson. Scalabrine was reportedly demoted for questioning the now ex-coach's tactics, and Erman was fired in April for secretly recording conversations between Jackson, other coaches and players.
Over the weekend, Warriors guard Stephan Curry said it would be "totally unfair" to fire Jackson.
