Kaysen Latham’s visit to the Wonderland amusement park at Amarillo nearly took a very bad turn when his roller coaster seatbelt suddenly released midway through the ride. Kaysen’s father, Delbert, who was sitting next to him, was recording the ride on the his phone, not knowing that soon he’d be holding on to his son for dear life.

The video captures the entire terrifying ride, as the coaster approaches the big dip, Kaysen’s excited face quickly turns to horror as he begins to slip from his seat.

Kaysen falls to the floor and lets his dad know something is wrong. “My seatbelt!” he can be heard saying.

His father quickly springs the hero-mode and grabs his young son around the torso, calmly reassuring him that everything will be fine, saying over and over, “I got you.”

Delbert spoke to local KFDA to recount the experience. “As we were going down, it threw him into the bottom of the cart and that’s when you see me reaching over to grab him,” he said. “Honestly when all of that started to happy, I didn’t even realize I was video-ing it anymore.”

Delbert also said that he spoke to the ride operator after their harrowing ride, and he said that incidents like theirs had happened before in the past, which angered the father even more. He vented about his experience on Facebook, saying, “'Scary moment for the Latham family tonight at #Wonderland our seatbelt came apart on the mousetrap and Kaysen slid to the bottom of the floor board and I had to grab him and pull him back up and hold him for the rest of the ride,' the post said. 'What makes it worse is when I told the guy at the end of the ride he stated that he knew that had happened sometimes!! Really it's already happens and you continue to let people ride??!! And after this they continued to let people ride they just didn't let anyone in the back seat! Please feel free to share and let people know how this place is being ran(sic)!”

Wonderland has released a statement explaining that the ride was originally built without seatbelts but that they were added to increase safety measures. They also explained that daily safety tests are made to make sure everything is operating as it should.

Delbert said that his son was not hurt in the incident and the he has no intention to sue, but is glad that their experience has shone some light on the issue.
