The history of hip-hop would not be a complete story without Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons. In fact, that also means he's a perfect person to help retell it.

The hip-hop mogul announced today (March 14) he's working on a new documentary series chronicling the timeline and evolution of the beloved genre's 40-plus-year history.

The documentary series, titled The Definitive History of Hip-Hop, is set to begin production sometime this year.

Taking to Instagram, Simmons announced the project, sharing the exciting news that All Def Digital will team up with Stephen David Entertainment and GroupM Entertainment to bring the idea for the series into fruition.

"Hip-hop began in the Bronx and Queens, and was fueled by pioneering new artists with an incredible hunger to express themselves in unimaginably bold new ways," Simmons said in a statement. "The Definitive History of Hip-Hop is the untold story of the birth of this art form – the series gets behind the scenes of what drove the beats, the rhymes, the ideas — and the people — that so powerfully hit a chord with all of youth culture in America and around the world."

He also details the documentary series' intentions, saying that they'll take a look at the beginning and work their way up to where the culture is in its contemporary form, celebrating the trailblazing icons who contributed so much along the way.

"It starts with the OGs of this disruptive force in entertainment, spotlights some of the lesser known artists who’ve fallen out of history or favor, and of course looks at the icons who are now household names whether you’re in L.A. or London, Toledo or Tokyo," he added.
