A Boston couple who wanted to have a nice, relaxing stay in Los Angeles, were put through hell when their Airbnb “super host” interrupted their sleep by banging on the door and crashing through the window.

Medical residents Jaleesa Jackson and Chiedozie Uwandu rented a guest house in June from a man named JJ on Airbnb, the couple said in an interview with the Boston Globe.

On the first morning of their stay, Jackson and Uwandu were jolted awake when they heard knocking and yelling at the front door around 5:30 a.m.

Jackson told the Globe she heard a man shout, “I know you're in there, Kevin” before she opened the door and told the man to leave. Later on, she told JJ about the incident and he replied, “Yeah, that was me. Sorry about the confusion. Life's too short for me to give you an explanation. Have a nice time in LA.”

Their nightmare was only beginning.

That night while they slept, a man wearing a hoodie came crashing through the window of their bedroom.

Uwandu, who suspected the man was a burglar, immediately leapt out of bed, jumped on the man and pinned him down with a knee in his back. However, the man broke free and ran away as Uwandu realized it was JJ.

Jackson called 911 and told them their Airbnb host attacked them. As police helicopters flew overhead, the couple waited at the house. Eventually, police brought JJ back to the house in a squad car.

Moments later, an elderly lady arrived and questioned Jackson and Uwandu about who they were and why they were staying in the house. From this conversation, the couple learned the old woman rented the house to JJ and did not authorize him to list the property on Airbnb.

After contacting Airbnb, the couple was told the company would refund the $708 they paid to rent the guest house; however, they were not given the money until recently. Additionally, Airbnb offered to relocate the couple to another property, but Jackson and Uwandu opted to check into a nearby Hilton hotel, which wound up costing them $2,300 for the room, parking, and expenses.

They asked Airbnb for $5,000 compensation but they were only given $2,500, plus five therapy sessions to “overcome the trauma,” which Jackson and Uwandu turned down.. 

After the couple’s story went public, Airbnb released a statement saying the host was removed from the site and that they fell short in handling the issue.

“Our original handling of this incident fell well below the high standards we set for ourselves. We have apologized to Dr. Jackson and Dr. Uwandu for our insufficient response. We are currently working with them to make this right, and we are reviewing every aspect of this case from the reports of the host’s disturbing behavior to our response. Our community’s safety is our priority, we are deeply sorry for the anguish and inconvenience our guests have experienced and again we are working to make it right.”
