Ohio Serial Killer Sentenced to Death
An Ohio serial killer who has been on trial since June will be put to death.
Anthony Sowell will die by lethal injection for murdering 11 African-American women and dumping their bodies around his property, Judge Dick Ambrose ruled Friday.
Police say that Sowell lured women to his home with the promise of alcohol or drugs. The women, who started disappearing in 2007, were disposed of in garbage bags and plastic sheets and dumped in various parts of Sowell’s house and yard. Unsuspecting neighbors believed the strong stench came from a nearby sausage factory.
“The only thing I want to say is I’m sorry. I know that might not sound like much, but I truly am sorry from the bottom of my heart,” Sowell told the jury when he took the stand on Monday in an unsworn statement.
Sowell was arrested on Halloween 2009, two days after police arrived at his house to follow-up on a sexual-assault complaint and began to find bodies. On July 22, he was convicted on 82 counts including aggravated murder, kidnapping, corpse abuse and evidence tampering.
