Rihanna Talks Hair, Style Inspiration in Vogue
Just when we think we have Rihanna's style cues down pat, she proves there’s still so much more than a few tricks up her sleeve.
The Bajan beauty gives us some insight into the makings of her inimitable fashion sense in the March 2014 issue of Vogue, her third cover of the fashion bible in just four years. For starters, she shares that she does her own eyeliner (her favorite is the kohl eyeliner from her RiRi Hearts MAC collection) and gives the interviewer an unprecedented look underneath her weave.
“It’s not my hair, but the girl who donated it, she’s the bomb,” the superstar says of her ever-evolving hairstyles. “I have two main hair people I work with. They’re always with me. I’m like, ‘I’m bored! I wanna change my hair!’ That’s the good thing about a weave. You can do whatever with it.”
And another trick of Rih Rih’s trade? She doesn’t spend millions on her jewels. “My jewelry’s all fake — from Claire’s. Or I get it from my mom’s boutique in Barbados. Her shop’s called FAB-U-LUS.”
She has inspired a legion of fashionistas with her signature mix of tomboy chic, mixing pegged sweatpants and an oversized bomber jacket with a sexy, backless bodysuit and killer heels, for example.
“I love baggy things. I wear men’s clothes, men’s shoes, oxfords, creepers,” she says, adding her obsession with menswear started as a teen. "I was very much a boy in my style, my demeanor. All my friends were guys. I loved things that boys did. I loved being easy with my clothes. I loved wearing hats and scarves and snapbacks on my head. It was my way of rebelling.”
The songbird, who turns 26 on Feb. 20, has her sights for much more in the future, including a fashion line of her own, she says. No matter what happens, though, we're sure she will continue to do it all on her own terms.
