Already having received a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, Sheldon Richardson's outlook on the season just got that much more bleak.

According to ESPN, the New York Jets defensive end was charged Thursday with resisting arrest, stemming from a July 14 incident near his home in St. Louis, where he engaged the police in a high-speed chase going as fast as 143 miles per hour.

Richardson, 24, sped away from police and allegedly parked in the driveway of a home and turned off his lights to slide under the radar, but cops spotted him because he had his brake lights on. When police caught up to him, they found a fully-loaded, semi-automatic gun in his 2014 Bentley and a strong odor of burned marijuana. Prosecutors told ESPN that there were no gun nor marijuana charges against Richardson on Thursday.

Making matters worse is that the Jets didn't have a clue about the incident, which completely blindsided the organization Thursday. Richardson had just vowed to stay clean following the suspension.

Now, he could be sentenced to up to a year in jail or fined up to $1,000. Richardson is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 27 for his arraignment.

The Jets told reporters that they're trying to gather more information about the 2013 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl defensive end's latest infraction.
