Justice: White Supremacist Finally Sentenced for Violent Beating of Lamarr Sandridge
In January of 2015, an Iowa white supremacist with Nazi tattoos brutally attacked a Black man outside of a bar. 40-year-old Randy Metcalf was later arrested and charged with violating the federal Hate Crime Act. Now, Metcalf has been sentenced for his unlawful attack of Lamarr Sandridge.
The incident occurred last winter when Metcalf and several women got into a verbal argument over a jukebox. During the altercation, Metcalf started taunting the women and their friend, Sandridge, with racial slurs.
At one point during the evening, Metcalf bragged to other bar attendees that he hated Black people. He and his other white friends even went as far as to admit that he has attended cross burnings, said the Justice Department.
Eventually, a fight occurred between one of the women and Metcalf. When Sandrige stepped in to help the woman, Metcalf and his friends began to beat 31-year-old Sandridge unconscious.
Metcalf’s friend, Jeremy M. Sanders, 41, put Sandridge in a headlock. Then, Sanders’ son, Joseph, 21, punched Sandridge in the face until he remained motionless on the ground. Finally, Metcalf stomped on Sandridge's face and head until the bartender pushed him off and told everyone to leave.
As a result of the fight, Sandridge suffered from a broken right eye socket and numerous scrapes and bruises on his face.
The FBI used surveillance video of the attack to charge Metcalf with a racially motivated hate crime, court records show.
In March, Metcalf was convicted. This week, a federal judge sentenced the racist to 10 years in prison for the “brutal and outrageous attack.”
“This vicious attack threatened the most basic standards of human decency and dignity,” Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, said in a statement. “While no sentence, including this one, can undo the harm inflicted, it does send an unequivocal message that the Justice Department will vigorously prosecute hate crimes.”
In addition to serving his 10-year sentence, Metcalf was ordered to pay $1,874.56 in restitution, the Justice Department said.
