Dwyane Wade Pens Book on Fatherhood
A year after winning sole custody of his two boys, Zion and Zaire, from his ex-wife, Miami Heat player Dwyane Wade has announced that he's writing a book about fatherhood. A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball will touch upon Wade's experiences as a single father and his own upbringing in a single parent home.
“As a child, I grew up with aspirations to one day be a professional basketball player, and I am living that dream every day as a proud member of the Miami Heat,” Wade said. “However, the daily role I play in the lives of my two children is the single most significant undertaking of my life, and the job I take most seriously.”
Wade's dedication to children and parenting go beyond his front door — he also runs his Wade’s World Foundation to provide support to community-based organizations that promote education, health and social skills for children in at-risk situations. During NBA All-Star weekend he held a Fatherhood Heroes event to discuss how important it is for fathers to stay involved in their children's lives. For this he's been recognized by several groups including President Barack Obama's Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative.
"I don't have to share it with people," Wade said about his personal life. "But I felt there was a need. So many people came up to me in this process, so many fathers, so many men came up to me to congratulate me and to ask me how, how I did it and why I believed I could do it."
A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball will be published by William Morrow of HarperCollins Publishers in September.
