Saweetie Defends Sampling Rap Classics: ‘I Can't Help What The People Like’
There’s no denying the Saweetie knows how to craft a hit song. The Bay Area-raised rapper has been on a fast track to rap stardom after she blew up with “Icy Girl,” her freestyle over the beat to Khia’s “My Neck, My Back.”
However, as of late, Saweetie has been catching some flack over sampling from other hit records. Her 2019 hit “My Type,” which was a summer staple last year, sampled Petey Pablo’s 2004 club banger. Pablo even joined her onstage at the 2019 BET Awards.Earlier this year, Saweetie delivered a twerk anthem with her latest release, “Tap In,” which flips Too $hort’s 2006 classic “Blow the Whistle.”
During a recent virtual sit-down with Desus & Mero on Sunday (Aug. 23), Saweetie addressed some of the feedback she’s received over her artistry.
“What’s crazy is that the older heads show me love. It’s like the young people who be like ‘Oh my gosh, here she goes with another sample, et cetera.’ But sampling is my speciality,” she said.
“Hip hop is built off of sampling so when they come for me I’m just like y’all just picking on me so whatever. Too $hort loved it. The old heads loved it. So, it’s whatever. I love it. I’m happy [‘Tap In’] has taken off the way it’s taken off.”
She continued, “What’s crazy about that is I was doing covers because that was just the social media thing to do. But it just so happens that my covers were getting picked up and were getting played on radio or where the songs that were the most streamed. So it’s like I can’t help what the people like.”
She also gave a status update on her forthcoming project, Pretty B***h Music, saying the album will be dropping “real soon” any day now.
