Dr. Dre: 'I Apologize to the Women I’ve Hurt'
Dr. Dre has come forth and apologized to the women he’s hurt in the past after recent allegations have put him in a negative light.
In a statement to the New York Times, Dre addresses criticism that the film Straight Outta Compton omits N.W.A’s history of misogyny and ignores Dre’s history that he physically abused women. The women — hip hop journalist Dee Barnes and R&B singer and former girlfriend of Dre’s, Michel’le, and label mate Tairrie B — have been the subject of various articles on abuse that have put Dre in a position where he needs to confront the issue.
Although he didn’t specifically name each woman, he told The Times, “Twenty-five years ago I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did. I’ve been married for 19 years and every day I’m working to be a better man for my family, seeking guidance along the way. I’m doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again.”
He added: “I apologize to the women I’ve hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”
Apple, where Dre works as a top executive, also released a statement, saying, “Dre has apologized for the mistakes he’s made in the past and he’s said that he’s not the same person that he was 25 years ago. We believe his sincerity and after working with him for a year and a half, we have every reason to believe that he has changed.”
On Tuesday, Dee Barnes wrote a piece for Gawker titled, “Here’s What’s Missing From Straight Outta Compton: Me and the Other Women Dr. Dre Beat Up,” that has been viewed well over 1.7 million times. The post sparked more conversations on the movie’s focus, questioning director F. Gary Gray on why he chose to not tell specific side stories. Though there was once a scene on Dre’s assault on Dee Barnes, it was later removed.
