1,000 Black Bikers Will Rally to End Gun Violence in New Jersey
More than 1,000 Black male motorcycle riders from throughout the East Coast will rally to end gun violence in their communities in Somerset, New Jersey, this Sunday, May 19.
The bikers will be doing outreach to youth in the community in conjunction with the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens.
For six years motorcycle riders of the Good Fellas Bike Club have gathered for the annual Biker Blessing. But this year in light of the gun violence in Chicago and the tragic events at Newtown, Connecticut, a rally to stop violence and bullying was added to the festivities.
Gun violence has disproportionately affected American youth. Every day 18 children and young adults 24 years old and under die from firearm injuries in the U.S., according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Another disturbing fact states that children and young adults under the age of 24 make up 38 percent of all firearm deaths and non-fatal injuries.
The First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens has been behind previous anti-violence initiatives in New Jersey, hosting gun buy-back programs and other events in the past. Rev. DeForest B. Soaries Jr. will pray for the bikers and their families.
The free event is open to the public and will take place from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, 771 Somerset Street, Somerset, NJ 08873. The annual Biker Blessing is part of the CJCDC’s efforts to reach all segments of the community it serves. This year’s event will also include a free stunt bike show along with free music and food.
