The last weekend of 2013 capped off a record-setting year at the box office, with the year's ticket sales adding up to $10.9 billion, up ten percent from last year. But the news wasn't good for some of the new releases this week.
Grudge Match, 47 Ronin and the Justin Bieber documentary Believe all crashed and burned, performing far below expectations. Believe even failed to make the top ten, coming in at 14th place. None of the films were able to knock The Hobbit 2: Desolation of Smaug out of the top spot, where it has been since its debut three weeks ago. Disney's animated family film Frozen came in a close second.
Third place went to Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, which has racked up $85 million since its release. The film, which features cameos from Drake, Kanye West and Will Smith to name a few, is close to surpassing the entire gross of the original Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
Next week's box office, the first of the new year, will be crowded with genre films like Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and Open Grave as the prestige films continue their race to the Oscars.
