New details in the Nov. 20 shooting death of Akai Gurley in a dark stairwell of the Pink Houses in Brooklyn by NYPD Officer Peter Liang have emerged.
Liang and his partner texted their union representative in the six and a half minutes after Gurley was shot down, instead of immediately calling 911, the Daily News reports.
Additionally, the officers were not assigned to patrol the hallways of the housing project they were in that evening. They were ordered not to go past the lobby of the building and instead patrol the courtyard by former Deputy Inspector Miguel Iglesias. 

The funeral for Gurley will be held Friday evening with Rev. Al Sharpton delivering the eulogy. 

Gurley and his girlfriend, Melissa Butler, entered the stairwell of the eighth floor where the officers confronted him. One officer fired a round from his gun, which struck Gurley in the chest, according to the New York Times. He later staggered several flights of steps before collapsing. 

According to the sister of Gurley's girlfriend, the Times reports, the officers did not identify themselves or give any commands to Gurley before firing a shot. Gurley, who did not live in the building, was visiting and getting his hair braided for several hours before he and his girlfriend decided to leave.

After a building elevator was taking too long, they decided to walk down the stairs.
