Too $hort: The Drugs Weren’t Mine

A video of the rapper’s attempted getaway surfaces.

A video of Too $hort running from LAPD surfaced on TMZ.com today. The less-than-a-minute clip shows Short (born Todd Anthony Shaw) talking to two police officers, and then suddenly breaking into a run before being wrestled to the ground.

Reportedly, Shaw gave chase early Wednesday morning when the police attempted to give him a breathalyzer test. He was booked for a DUI and felony narcotics possession.

Speaking on behalf of Shaw, David Weintraub, CEO of DWE Talent, told TMZ, "In the past, Short, like many others, has been mistreated by law enforcement and these unfortunate prior incidents led to the complications after the stop."

As for the narcotics possession, Weintraub said that the drugs, which were reportedly discovered in the back of the patrol car after Short’s arrest, must have been there from before: "Short was diligently searched and cuffed prior to being placed in the disgustingly filthy patrol car ... It was 3 a.m., the cop car smelled like vomit and was littered with remnants from prior arrests of the evening."

According to the site’s sources, those "remnants" may include what is either meth or ecstasy laced with meth (preliminary tests were still underway).

Weintraub virtually scoffed. "Any assertion that Short was carrying powder is ridiculous! Every rap fan knows Short’s into weed."

LAPD told TMZ that standard protocol is to search the patrol car after every arrest.

Short, lauded as a rap pioneer, is scheduled to perform later today at the West Coast Fest along with E-40 and DJ Quik, among others. He was being held on $10,000 bail.
