Is Offset Being Targeted By Cops Because He's Black?
On Friday, July 20, Offset's was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia. Reportedly, after making an illegal lane change he was pulled over and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a weapon during a crime, possession of weed and an improper lane change.
Now Offset's lawyer is speaking out and claims the rapper, whose real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, is being targeted because he is Black and successful.
Offset's attorney Drew Findling, who also reps Gucci Mane and Katt Williams, told TMZ the Atlanta cops used a lane change as an excuse to target the rapper, "It's a common theme. We're talking about a young, African-American man driving a shiny, beautiful luxury car and clad in designer clothes and watches and jewelry." He continued, "Unfortunately people in his genre become a target for law enforcement who think that lifestyle is connected to some illegal activity ... and that is a sad statement."
Findling also clams Offset says did not have a weapon, "The attorney says the passenger in Offset's car -- his assistant -- was a licensed gun holder who had firearms in the car for security. Findling notes Offset needs protection because of the large amounts of cash he typically carries and the expensive jewelry he wears."
Sounds like Offset is definitely fighting back but the new father is a convicted felon and on probation for drugs and gun charges stemming from an arrest in April 2015. If found guilty of the most recent charges, he could face serious jail time.
