Morgan State Homecoming Activities Canceled Or Postponed As Search For Shooter Continues
Morgan State University has announced the cancellation and postponement of homecoming activities following a mass shooting that took place on the campus on Tuesday (October 2), wounding five people, four of them students.
In a letter posted on the school’s website, the school’s president, president David K. Wilson updated the Morgan State community about the decision.
“Today, we unfortunately find ourselves navigating this tragic event during a time at which we should be celebrating our National Treasure during Homecoming. Please understand that the safety of our campus is of the utmost importance and our resolve in ensuring that we have a secure campus is paramount,” the letter read. “In response to last evening’s events, we are aggressively increasing security measures on campus, further amplifying additional security measures that have been implemented in recent years.”
Among the activities that were canceled were the school’s Homecoming Concert, Silent Headphones Party, Homecoming Pep Rally, Homecoming Parade, and all other on-campus events including our Lady Bear Volleyball match.”
The Homecoming Football Game and the MSU 39th Annual Homecoming Gala have been postponed.
The shooting took place following an event to crown Mister and Miss. Morgan State at the Murphy Fine Arts Center, as numerous students were on their way to a coronation ball.
According to CBS Baltimore, the Baltimore Police Department has released surveillance footage of potential suspects in connection with the shooting on Thursday (October 5).
Baltimore police commissioner Richard Worley said that the shooting was the result of "a dispute between two smaller groups, and one individual was a target of two individuals who had weapons.” The target was not among those who were wounded. All of the victims had non-life threatening injuries and were expected to survive. Officials are still asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects.
Baltimore mayor Brandon Scott reiterated his plea for gun violence to be addressed all over the country.
“This is another example of what happens when you have a proliferation of guns in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them,” Scott told local station WFAA. “Conflicts are going to happen, but when people who do not have the maturity to own or even have handgun in their hands [or] have access to them, this is what happens.”
No arrests had been made as of Thursday (October 5). Classes at Morgan State have also been canceled for the remainder of the week, the school said.
