Blair Underwood, Nicole Ari Parker Hitting Broadway
Another classic play is getting a modernized, star-studded Black makeover for the Great White Way.
Blair Underwood will star as Stanley in a new multi-racial production of the Tennessee Williams classic drama Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway.
The all-star cast also includes Nicole Ari Parker as Blanche and Daphne Rubin-Vega as Stella. The sultry drama is set in the 1950s New Orleans’s French Quarter and tells the story of a fragile socialite (Parker) who’s forced to move in with her wary sister (Rubin-Vega) and her brutish husband (Underwood). Wood Harris will portray the role of Mitch in the drama.
The production, which will feature original music by jazz trumpeter great Terrance Blanchard, opens April 3, 2012, and will enjoy a limited run from April 22 thru July 22 at New York City's Broadhurst Theatre.
Producers Stephen Byrd and Alia Jones, the same team that staged the successful Broadway production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, which starred Terrance Howard, Anika Noni Rose, Phylicia Rashad and James Earl Jones, assembled this highly anticipated revival of Streetcar Named Desire.
Tickets for Streetcar Named Desire go on sale February 6.
