Map Shows 74 School Shootings Since Sandy Hook
Tuesday’s shooting at an Oregon high school marks at least the 74th instance of a firearm discharged on school grounds or in a school building since the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, according to data maintained by Everytown for the Gun Safety. That amount averages out to nearly one school shooting per week in the past year and a half.
As a public advocate for policies that it believes will prevent future tragedies, the group compiled statistics showing the date, location, school name and school type (K-12 or college/university) related to each shooting. Along with mass shootings, the data includes assaults, homicides, suicides and accidental shootings.
Of the shootings, 39 occurred in K-12 schools, while 35 occurred at a college or university.
Georgia, which recently passed a controversial pro-gun law, racked up the highest number of incidents, with 10 shootings reported; Florida was home to seven; Tennessee was home to five, and North Carolina and California claimed four each. Atlanta was the only city to have had three shootings, whereas six other cities had two shootings.
"Communities all over the country live in fear of gun violence,” read a preface to the list. "That’s unacceptable. We should feel secure in sending our children to school — comforted by the knowledge that they’re safe.”
