Hip Hop Awards ’20: 5 Of The Most Lit Dance Performances

From back up dancers to triple threat artists, here are some of the acts that will stand the test of time.

The BET Hip Hop Awards aren’t only about who can spit the best bars — it’s also the best display in having a good time on stage and celebrating hip hop since its early beginnings at a block party in the Bronx, NY in 1973. Along with this emphasis on rap ability comes the dances that go along with them, providing a great space to see some of the hottest moves of the moment. They can come from backup dancers of course, but it’s always fun to see what the performers themselves can do in the spur of the moment. Whether it’s a clearly defined dance, or it’s some fresh, unseen move, there’s a lot of value in learning what dances your favorite rapper can handle.

This list looks back at some of the hottest dance moves in recent years at the BET Hip Hop Awards that capture the moment of having fun and releasing the unexpected.

  1. Lil Duval’s Celebratory Dance For The City Boys

Lil Duval’s turn as the host of the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards came with its fair share of high quality laughs. The comedian was all over the place with his jokes and announcements for performances — letting the world know that the reason that he was picked to be the host of the ceremony was because of his comedic ability to make the room at ease. So it makes sense that he’d find a great way of poking fun at the battle of the City Boyz vs. Hot Girls with his own hilarious track: “City Boyz Anthem.” Performing with TOM. G and Kamillion, he made up a dance that involved him bouncing on his knees as if he was about to start twerking. Good luck trying that one out at home.

  2. Cardi B’s Ground-And-Pound Arch Showcase

There's no one as sensual and dominant as Cardi B when she gets in her zone. Her sexy ways make for some empowering moves that capture the energy of her already powerful songs. And at the 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards, she brought the arena to its knees with a show of “Get Up 10” and “Backin It Up.” When the show switched to the latter, Cardi got into her bag, dipping down to her knees and popping her backside to the beat of the song. But she really got into her bag when she got on all four and wiggled in ways that only she can.

  3. Megan Thee Stallion’s Bouncing Bubble

You can see just from her Instagram videos that Megan Thee Stallion knows how to move like no other. By just slightly moving her legs, she makes everything wobble in the right places, hypnotizing scores of fans who wonder just how she does it. At the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards, she put this ability on full display with her performance of “Cash S**t,” that featured the perfectly-timed slide out of DaBaby on the floor, when she showcased her signature moves in front of a boat. Surrounded by ladies all dressed like the American flag, Megan performed the twerk of all twerks, having a special kind of fun on stage with everyone else. It truly felt like the Fourth of July party everyone wanted to be invited to.

  5. Snoop Dogg’s Cosigning Bop Step

Yo Gotti, Rocko Da Don, and Rich Homie Quan took the stage at the 2013 BET Awards and graced us with a medley of some of their biggest songs, such as Rocko’s “U.O.E.N.O.” While the show was pretty straight forward, this performance featured the hottest move of the night going to Snoop Dogg himself in his first turn as the show’s host. As the performers played their songs, Snoop acted as a supporting hype man, hitting a smooth step that’s as OG classic as they come.

  6. Lil Kim’s Robotic Medley Of Moves

At the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards, Lil Kim went viral for a set of Terminator-like moves that made viewers want to make sure that she didn’t have a battery pack in her back. In a bedazzled sequin suit and surrounded by an ecstatic group of backup dancers, Lil Kim bet over and swam to the front of the stage while standing in place. The effect was an instant meme and proof that she not only knows how to have fun, she still has what it takes to create iconic movements. Wanna rumble with the bee?
