Commentary: Let Halle Berry Lose Her Baby Weight in Peace
The public has oohed and aahed and marveled at the news that Halle Berry (at 47 years old!) and husband Olivier Martinez have had a baby boy. And now, there's nothing left to do but wait. No, not for photos of little Maceo, but for the next leg of Celeb Baby Watch: the post-baby body reveal. This is when Halle steps outside in all of her age-defying gloriousness and the blogs and gossip sites report in detail on her weight, "curves" and progress in getting back to the size she was before pregnancy. Was that a dimple of fat on a belly that just housed a human? Or is she superhuman, not at all like the rest of womankind, and able to snap back to uber-toned in just a matter of weeks?
In the same way that every jiggle, wiggle and move made by Beyoncé was monitored after having Blue Ivy, the same dedication will be applied to Halle. The attention will probably be a relief for Kim Kardashian, whose poundage has been a favorite topic and who could probably use someone new to take the spotlight. Just this week, Us online declared with glee in a headline that, " It's Baaack! Kim Kardashian Shows Off Her Famous Booty in Skinny Jean," as if fitting back into tight jeans was as newsworthy as raising a person.
Only a few stars have escaped what might be one of the sickest public rituals of fame and they include Amber Rose and Alicia Keys. Granted, both of them stayed low-key and relatively out of site after having a baby, and Amber's latest pictures show her only from the shoulders up, with most of her body submerged in a pool. Hopefully, this dangerous practice will send soon—it leaves celebrity women focused on salads and treadmills instead of diapers and naps, and leaves the rest of us believing that if we're not losers we'll have a six pack six weeks after giving birth. Here's to letting the baby and the baby's mama enjoy some happy time with their baby fat.
