EXCLUSIVE: Queen Latifah Recalls How The Cast Of ‘Living Single’ Was Told To ‘Lose Weight’
Queen Latifah is on a mission to remove the shame and stigma attached to weight. The multi-talented actress, known for using her platform to speak against unhealthy body image in Hollywood, recently sat down with Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris to openly address her personal experience with criticism on the set of the famous 90s sitcom, Living Single.
“We helped create Living Single,” Queen Latifah explains in the new episode of Red Table Talk, obtained exclusively by BET.com. The multi-hyphenate star went on to reveal how much she enjoyed working with her castmates—Kim Coles, Kim Fields, and Erika Alexander—to represent the culture and overall image of beautiful and intelligent Black women living in Brooklyn. “We loved being able to do that!”
Despite the skyrocketing popularity of Living Single, Latifah reveals the cast was told to lose weight. She details, “The word came down that we needed to lose weight. We are on the number one show among Black and Latino households in America and you’re telling us we need to lose weight. Maybe you’re the one with the problem, maybe you’re the one that has the issue.”
There is a long history of entertainers being told to change their bodies in order to meet "societal standards" when appearing on television—even supermodel Tyra Banks was told that she was “too big” when beginning her career. Sadly, the policing of Black women’s bodies in the industry continues today. Singer Lizzo, who constantly uses her platform to promote body confidence, often speaks against the criticism faced by women with curves.
Hoping to combat the negativity, Latifah partnered with the It’s Bigger Than Me campaign to change the conversation about obesity. To learn more about her partnership and personal struggles with body image, watch the upcoming episode of RTT.
The new episode of Red Table Talk with Queen Latifah will stream Wednesday, June 8 at 9am PT/12pm ET on Facebook Watch.
