Mattel Unveils Disney’s The Little Mermaid Doll Collection
Mattel is unveiling a brand new line of dolls inspired by the set and characters from the highly anticipated new film Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The company had previously announced an Ariel doll which will now be joined by fellow cast members including one inspired by the film's villain Ursula.
The new line of toys will now include dolls of Ariel’s sisters featuring a unique print decorating their removable top and gorgeous tails with glittery fins, and dolls of King Triton and Prince Eric wearing signature outfits complete with removable storytelling accessories, as well as a new underwater playset inspired by Ariel’s Grotto featuring a handle for on-the-go play.
The new live-action version of Disney's The Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey as Ariel--a fact that initially earned some racist backlash, but the 23-year-old singer is shining in the official trailer and the dolls created in her likeness are beautiful.
Bailey first shared a photo of the doll on her Instagram page writing, "The little girl in me is pinching herself right now ..i have my own Little Mermaid Ariel doll !!!" Bailey said earlier this month in an Instagram reel announcing the toy's release, according to Entertainment Tonight. "I can’t believe how much she captures my version of this iconic character."
She added, “I am literally choking up because this means so much to me. To have one that looks like me that’s my favorite Disney character is very surreal." Her likeness was captured from Bailey's flowing red locs in the movie, down to her signature mole above her eyebrow.
The Little Mermaid is a live-action version of the 1989 animated classic of the same name, which won two Academy Awards for best original song for “Under the Sea” and best original score.
The Little Mermaid is slated to hit theaters on May 26 and also stars Melissa McCarthy and Jonah Hauer-King.
