Dallas Cowboys fans around the country have to be wondering when is enough enough?

For several seasons and through three different head coaches we’ve watched quarterback Tony Romo make mind-numbing mistakes that has cost his team key games. If Sunday night’s season-opening 27-24 loss is any indication, things aren’t about to get better where Romo’s decision-making is concerned anytime soon.

Romo unwisely gambled on a throw to injured receiver Dez Bryant with Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis in tight coverage. Romo rolled and attempted to lob a pass near the sideline but Revis stepped in front of Bryant and intercepted the ball with less than a minute to play and the score tied 24-24.

Revis’ interception set the stage for Nick Folk’s 50-yard game-winning field goal.

As has been the case whenever Romo has blown big games, he owned up to his failings.

"It was a dumb decision," Romo said. "Too reactionary. I should’ve made sure, and that was my fault. It’s disappointing and frustrating. We win that football game if I don’t do what I did. It’s hard to swallow, just knowing that we lost that game because of me."

The question the Cowboys are eventually going to have to answer is when should they stop losing games because of the veteran franchise quarterback who has proven himself to be a high-risk, low-reward type of player throughout his entire career.

What probably has the organization and the fans a little confused is that Romo is great for putting up great statistics. He completed 23 of 36 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns for a passer rating of 101.9.

But what those numbers don’t tell you is that when the Cowboys needed Romo the most Sunday night, he let them down. In addition to the pick, he also had a costly turnover at the Jets’ one-yard line earlier in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys were leading 24-17 at the time and had a chance to increase their lead to at least 10 points when Romo scrambled and then lost the football on the hit to thwart a scoring drive that may have put the game away.

"I was trying to protect the ball," Romo said afterwards. "I tried to get to the end zone. Like I said, I cost us the football game tonight. I’ve gotta do better."
