On this day, Grammy Award-winning singer Zensi Miriam Makeba  was born in Johannesburg, South Africa.  Most known for the song, “Pata Pata” (1957), Makeba is credited for popularizing African music in America, having recorded with popular artists as Harry Belafonte and Paul Simon. In 2008, she passed away after suffering a heart attack following a performance in Caserta, Italy. She was 76.
