'The Breakfast Club' Recap: Running Back Hot Topics with DJ Envy and Charlamagne tha God
This week, DJ Envy and Charlamagne tha God hit the studio to discuss the hottest topics in pop culture. So, let’s run through some of the top highlights.
On Monday (July 17), the digital streets were buzzing over Kevin Hart’s shocking recent interview with Dr. Dre during his Peacock series Hart to Heart. During the chat, Dre revealed that he turned down collaborations with Prince and Michael Jackson, who are two of his musical heroes. He added that he now regrets those decisions.
“I felt like, what the f--k am I gonna do with them? What the f--k am I gonna do in the studio with them? Those are my f--king heroes,” said Dre.

Charlamagne added some interesting context that made sense. Dre questioned that as OGs and innovators, why would they need him? Think about it. He’d probably be better working with new people who could be shaped and molded. But MJ and Prince were already blueprints by the time Dr. Dre came around.
On Tuesday, (July 18), Charlemagne and Envy discussed Fabolous’ comments about today’s women rappers.
“I love female rappers talking some real ish. Women are so strong, have so many stories and perspectives that we need to hear in pure form,” said Fab. “No disrespect to any female rappers out there. But I think there’s only one style of female rap/hip-hop being promoted, programmed, and looked at as successful now.”
It was mentioned that sex sells. There are women who rap about other things. But people don’t hype them up as much. So there’s that.
On Wednesday (July 19), Roc Nation’s Emory Jones stopped by to discuss his partnership with Puma and making the brand cool. Jones dropped a quick history lesson.
“Even though it’s a German company, the reason why we know Puma is because of a Black man, Clyde Frazier. It’s so many iconic moments there. It was like, let me go tap back into that and walk that process down.”
He also shared his memory of getting his first pair of suede Puma’s and how big of a deal that was. Now that he has his own shoe with the brand, it’s a full circle moment.
Finally, we end the wrap-up with a review of the New York Times compilation list of stories by 50 rappers. Charla and Envy zeroed in on a story by Gucci Mane. The rapper shared that Birdman was a major inspiration for him to get out of the streets and pursue a career in music.
