Gabourey Sidibe Talks About Being Americanized

The actress said she's over African-inspired fashion and afros.

Gabourey Sidibe stopped by Live With Kelly! this week to talk about her role on Showtime's The Big C. During the interview, Kelly Ripa noted that Sidibe's character, Andrea, returns to her roots in the new season after traveling to Africa, said that she loves African-inspired clothing, and then asked Sidibe if she felt the same way.
“I’m actually African, I’m Senegalese, and so I’m over it,” she said adding that she hasn't worn that stuff since she was 11. “I’m very Americanized and I hated the afro. I liked it for like three days and then I was over it.”
Ripa then asked the actress how long it took her to grow out her character's afro hairstyle and return to the straight locks she usually sports. Gabourey apparently couldn't wait as she said it took about 10 hours from the moment she landed back home from the show's shooting location in Puerto Rico to have her afro exchanged for her weave, which she shows off with a smile and a flip of her hair.
What do you think about Sidibe's admission of being Americanized and preferring her silky weave to afros and dashikis?
