[Video] The Greatest Sports Choke of All Time
Even a couple of days removed, it's quite evident — Northern Iowa suffered the worst sports choke of all time Sunday night.
Up 12 points over No. 3 Texas A&M with 44 seconds remaining in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, all 11th-seeded Northern Iowa had to do was run out the clock to stamp its ticket into the Sweet 16.
Instead, all the Panthers did was buckle under the pressure in epic fashion, committing turnover after turnover, allowing the Aggies to score 14 straight points and force overtime, where they advanced to the next round.
Wait...what? That's right, Northern Iowa gave up 14 points in 44 seconds.
To put it into perspective, Northern Iowa had a 99.9 percent chance to seal the victory up 14 with only 44 ticks on the clock. Yet, they let that lead slip away in what has to be the single worst choke in sports history.
On the flip side of the Panthers' 99.99 percent chance of winning at that moment, ESPN's data-driven FiveThirtyEight website calculated that Texas A&M pulled off a 1-in-3000 comeback, depending on how you want to look at it.
Sorry, Northern Iowa, but we think you did more to lose that game in less than a minute than Texas A&M did to win.
This still doesn't make any sense. What a choke!
