This Day in Black History: Dec. 21, 1964
Scientists claim that pitch and harmony is what makes a song catchy and makes you want to sing along to it. When the Temptations produced My Girl, written by Smokey Robinson, with David Ruffin as lead vocals, its lovability was evident in an instant.
On Dec. 21, 1964, the hit song became the Temptations' first No. 1 hit when it propelled to the top of the Billboard charts.
Ruffin, a former backing singer, went on to become a fan favorite, leading hits such as "Ain’t Too Proud To Beg" and "Since I Lost My Baby." Ruffin’s popularity was short lived, and he was later fired.
But it should be noted though that "My Girl" currently holds the position as one of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
