The first Black infantry unit organized during the Civil War, the 54th Massachusetts Regiment of the Union Army is formed.

The 54th Massachusetts Regiment of the Union Army, the first African-American infantry unit organized during the Civil War, was formed. The regiment's heroism was celebrated in 1989's Academy Award-winning film Glory, starring Denzel Washington.
