Beauty Review: Strobing Is the Secret to Dewy, Glowing Skin
From Instagram to your favorite celebrities, strobing is everywhere this summer, and it's quickly edging out contouring as the season’s hottest beauty trend. But unlike contouring, which can be tricky, it’s an absolute cinch to pull off.
Celebrity makeup artist Mia "Mimi J" Johnson, whose clients include Angela Simmons, Kenya Moore and Mimi Faust, is sharing her strobing tutorial exclusively with B*Real “It’s quite funny because strobing is really nothing more than highlighting. It’s also adding a glow-from-within, effortless, beautiful skin type of look,” she says. Here’s how to recreate this glam at home.
1. Create a Glowing Canvas
After prepping skin with a makeup primer, mix your favorite foundation with a liquid illuminating highlighter. Apply all over your face with a foundation brush for even coverage, and be sure to extend the foundation down the neck and up to the top of the hairline. Johnson uses Becca Ultimate Coverage Complexion Creme ($44) in Tobacco and Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector ($41) in Topaz.
2. Conceal Imperfections
“Concealer is a key product because it’s doing the effect of highlighting,” she says. Use a creamy concealer under your eyes, bringing it down into a triangle, over blemishes and other imperfections, but go easy. Because you applied your foundation as a first layer, you shouldn’t need too much product. Johnson uses Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer in SX11 ($48).
3. Contour (Optional)
Using the top of your ear as a guide, use the handle of a makeup brush angled downwards to find you natural cheekbone. Your contouring product should be applied above that line and the highlighter goes beneath it. Johnson uses Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Topaz ($38).
4. Blend Out Harsh Lines
Blend your foundation and concealer with a damp cosmetic makeup sponge. Use it to press, not rub, the product into skin. This helps mimic the texture of natural skin. Johnson uses a Beauty Blender ($20).
5. Apply Blush
For that fresh, dewy look, apply a cream blush to the apples of the cheeks with a foundation brush. Johnson uses Kevyn Aucoin The Creamy Glow in Tres Belle ($26). To finish, take a clean, small brush, apply a small amount of foundation, and lightly go over your blush to make it appear like a natural flush of color.
6. Apply Shimmery Highlighter
“If you’re outside and the sun is shining down on you, those are the places that you’re highlighting, where the sun naturally hits your face,” Johnson says. Using an angled brush, tapping off excess product first, apply powdered highlighter across your T-Zone, on the top of the cheekbones, across your Cupid’s Bow and chin. Johnson uses Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal ($38). With your fingers, pat the product gently into your skin to blend.
And voilà! For maximum impact, Johnson adds some gold pigment to Dionne’s eyes, winged black liquid eyeliner, glossy nude lip, and wispy lashes to create the finished look.
