Here's What We Know About the North Park Shooter Who Killed His Estranged Wife and an 8-Year-Old Boy
After the horrific shooting at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino, Calif., new details have emerged about the shooter and his troubling past.
On Monday, 53-year-old Cedric Anderson walked into a special-needs classroom with a .357 revolver. He opened fire on his wife, Karen Elaine Smith, 53, and hit two children in the process. One of the children, 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez, died as a result of his injuries.
The other student, a 9-year-old, remains at Loma Linda University Medical Center. He is in stable condition.
After killing Smith on the scene, Anderson turned the gun on himself and took his own life. Anderson had a criminal history that included weapons charges, drug charges and accusations of domestic violence, said San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan.
Smith’s mother told New York Daily News, her daughter regretted marrying the man who took her life.
“He was a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said Irma Sykes, 80.
Smith and Anderson had only been married for just a few months; however, the teacher quickly regretted her decision just a few weeks after their wedding, said Sykes.
“As soon as they married, he turned on her. The real Cedric came out,” Skyes told the Daily News.
Shortly after saying, “I do,” Smith became worried about Anderson’s dangerous behavior. She would call her mother and say Anderson threatened to kill her.
“He told her he would throw her out the window,” Skyes said. “She was shocked, like, ‘What happened?’ He was so kind to her while they were dating. She had no idea.”
When Smith made a decision to leave Anderson for good, he snapped.
The San Bernardino community hosted a prayer vigil at Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Monday evening.
