Questlove Wins Oscar For Best Documentary: ‘It’s about the marginalized people in Harlem’
Summer of Soul took home the Oscar Sunday night in the Documentary Feature category.
Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, a first-time director, was overwhelmed by the stunning win for the film that features archival footage of the long-forgotten 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. The event celebrated Black culture and music at a time of racial upheaval.
“It’s not about me. It’s about the marginalized people in Harlem that need to heal from their pain,” Thompson said during his emotional speech. “Just know that in 2022, this is not just a story about 1969 marginalized people in Harlem.”
The Grammy Award-winning musicians’ documentary beat out Emmy-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s Attica, a film that recounts the 1971 uprising at Attica Correctional Facility.
