Soul Train Awards ‘20: 8 Performers Who Could Host The Show

Are these young folks ready to fill big shoes?

In 1987, Dionne Warwick hosted the first Soul Train Music Awards with Luther Vandross. Over the years, Patii LaBelle, Will Smith, Gladys Knight, Brandy, LL Cool J, Erykah Badu, and many others have served as master of ceremonies at the awards show, setting the tone for the evening and keeping energy high. It’s a coveted gig with big shoes to fill. Here are seven performers that we think could do justice to the role in the future.

  1. H.E.R.

H.E.R. continues to become one of R&B’s most exciting faces, showing off her vibrant personality through songs, interviews, and performances. Most recently, she surprised the world with an epic verse at the BET Hip Hop Music Awards. Her unique, eccentric style would be the highlight of the Soul Train Music Awards if she were to host the ceremony in the future.

  2. Jacquees

Jacquees gets a mention solely for the hilarious boy band-style of dancing that made his earliest music videos so captivating. For the show’s opening routine, replicating this would have the crowd in stitches. Going along with the fact that he’s a smiling and charismatic musician, him hosting seems like a logical choice to make for the show’s staff behind the scenes.

  3. Ella Mai

Though Ella Mai isn’t always in the camera’s eye when she’s not releasing music, the bit of her personality that we have been lucky enough to see leads us to believe she would be an ideal fit for hosting the Soul Train Music Awards. It may take years for something like this to happen, but gives us something to look forward to.

Whether it’s through hilarious tweets or Instagram Live episodes where she speaks her mind, Ari Lennox has proven to be one of the most effortlessly funny new singers in the game. The potential for viral moments from her is endless.

  6. Lizzo

Who has a bigger personality than Lizzo? The always-vibrant singer is just the kind of musician that you want to host an award show: not only is she capable of commanding attention, she can always be trusted to keep an audience on their toes. She can tell jokes and play the flute, twerk or open her heart for an emotional monologue. The range is impressive.

  7. Cardi B

The biggest rapper in the game. The head honcho. Kulture’s mom. Cardi B has the golden touch no matter what she does. She can interview presidential candidates with the same grace that she explains to the world, in vivid detail, what she loves about her husband Offset. Cardi can’t miss. Imagine her as the face of the Soul Train Music Awards, having important conversations with the audience about the night in her uniquely hilarious way.

Singer Teyana Taylor’s nostalgic music is just one piece of what has made her a growing legend in the R&B space; she also has the biggest personality of whatever rooms she’s in, without question. If you want someone to control the flow of the award show with grace along with being able to bring the tension to the proceedings, Taylor is the perfect singer to make that happen.
