Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity was founded at Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana.
Also on this day, in 1931, Alvin Ailey, choreographer and founder of the acclaimed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, was born in Rogers, Texas. Ailey would create over 79 ballets over his lifetime, including his most popular and critically acclaimed work, Revelations, which drew upon his “blood memories” of Texas blues, spirituals and gospel.
Also on this day, in 1943, George Washington Carver, the scientist who developed more than 300 products derived from peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes and helped revolutionize the agricultural economy in the South, dies in Tuskegee, Alabama, at age 82.
