Meek Mill Beat Drake and Kendrick Lamar for a 2016 Billboard Music Award

Wiz Khalifa and Drake took home other hardware.

In what some are calling surprising, Meek Mill took home Billboard’s award for Top Rap Album Sunday night (May 22) at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.

Dreams Worth More Than Money beat out Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, Dr. Dre’s Compton and Drake and Future’s What a Time to Be Alive. Up until this point, it seemed that the Philly rapper took zero Ws away from 2015. We’re glad he can chalk one up in the win column, even if it came a year later.

Meek is still currently under house arrest, however last month a judge granted him the right to be able to record new music as long as he releases it for free. It had been reported that Meek planned to drop Dreamchasers 4 on the same day (April 29) Drizzy released his latest album, Views, however it never ended up surfacing.

Wiz Khalifa ended up winning Best Rap Song with “See You Again” while Fetty Wap won Best New Artist and Drake took home the honor for Top Rap Artist.

No hip-hop awards were aired on television, however those closest to Meek Mill celebrated his newest hardware on social media. Check out some of their responses below.
