‘Yo! MTV Raps’ Andre ‘Doctor Dré’ Brown Has Leg Amputated Due To Rare Infection
Andre “Doctor Dré” Brown, a former Beastie Boys DJ and co-host of the popular show Yo! MTV Raps, reportedly had one of his legs amputated below the calf after he developed a rare infection.
According to Rolling Stone, Brown accidentally damaged his right ankle on Memorial Day, and while the incident wasn’t initially serious, it turned into an infection.
“The infection that was in my feet had started eating away at my bones,” he says.
“If I had waited another day, I’d have been septic, and I could’ve died.”
Doctors would subsequently amputate Brown’s leg and fitted him with a prosthetic. He also underwent months of physical therapy.
Brown famously co-hosted Yo! MTV Raps during the late 1980s and 1990s. Along with Ed Lover and Fab 5 Freddy, the landmark program introduced a generation to hip hop.
Brown would later go on to stints as DJ of New York City radio stations Hot 97 and Power 105 as well as Los Angeles’ The Beat. He currently hosts the health and wellness show The Doctor’s Appointment on LL Cool J’s Rock the Bells Radio on SiriusXM.
In addition to his amputated leg, Brown developed Type 2 diabetes in 2007, which sparked a series of health-related events, including the amputation of his toe, multiple leg injuries and blindness. He’s since set up a GoFundMe page in order to raise money for recent medical bills and recovery.
