"Mumble rap" has come under quite a lot of scrutiny this past year especially with the rising popularity of artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty. From hip-hop pioneers to purists, the subgenre has easily grown into a hot topic issue within the rap community. The latest figure to stand in opposition is rapper Young M.A.

The Brooklyn emcee recently sat down with MONTREALITY to discuss the current state of hip-hop, which she feels is currently imbalanced due to the Lil Uzis and Yachtys of today dominating the industry. “There’s definitely a lot of the other stuff going on right now,” the HerStory rapper said of rap’s diverse sound. “It’s definitely not a balance, it’s definitely one [side] higher than the other.”  

During the 10-minute conversation, Young M.A equated the rise of mumble rap to the decline of lyricism. “I can’t never knock nobody, but it's definitely the Lil Yachtys and Lil Uzis definitely outweighing the game right now,” she added.

"They're not gonna stop being how they are," she said. "People bash them so much but I don't think bashing them is going [to] help anything."  

Lil Boat has previously responded to his critics, specifically those that say that he is the "poster child for wack rappers," on The Breakfast Club. “I don’t see where I be mumbling," he told Charlemagne Tha God. "I’m not saying I really be ‘spitting,’ but I feel like I open up my mouth. Or I be harmonizing or singing… I’m not tripping. As long as I continue to prosper, I’ll take mumbling to the top,” he said. "We’ll just have to leave the mumble rapping conversation up for interpretation."
