Corine Claiborne is a Las Vegas dynamo who renders unto her community, and now as the city’s first Black woman to be elevated to bishop for non-denominational churches, she will combine her faith with municipal authority as a mentor to the city's neediest.

Her job is to help residents meet their basic needs—food, clothing and shelter—in the post-recession era.

Claiborne's consecration ceremony took place at the New Bethel Baptist Church, and Sunday was declared Corine Claiborne Day by Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman.

Claiborne, who has lived in Las Vegas for 54 years, told a reporter her new post is “just an elevation of God that's really indescribable and I plan to walk in it and do exactly what he wants me to do.”

Her church, the Tabernacle of Faith, is also a distribution center for the Las Vegas food non-profit Three Square.
