49ers Give Ex-Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper a Look
It’s seems like forever since the name Daunte Culpepper has been associated with the NFL.
But after a two-year absence from the highest level of professional football, the 34-year-old Culpepper has a tryout on Monday for the San Francisco 49ers roster as a quarterback. Culpepper, who was once the franchise quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings and the former No. 11 overall pick, hasn’t played in the NFL since a brief stint with Detroit in 2009.
“We’re going to have Daunte in for a workout and kick the tires,” first-year 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said to the Associated Press. “I’m looking forward to that.”
Harbaugh likely became interested in Culpepper after watching his two quarterbacks Alex Smith and rookie Colin Kaepernick struggle during the 49ers’s 24-3 loss to New Orleans in the preseason opener on Friday.
It will be interesting to see if Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowl player, still has anything left. He spent last season playing in the United Football League.
