Mary J. Blige isn’t harboring pain over her divorce to ex-husband, Martin “Kendu” Isaacs and more. Even so, when she looks back on their 13-year marriage and tragic ending, she can’t help but feel overwhelmed with a mix of emotions. In a new interview, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul unravels all those feelings towards her ex and some of the sentiments were pretty harsh.

“I’m doing OK,” Mary J. told Variety when asked about her personal life. “I’m living. I’m not happy about a lot of things. I thought someone loved me, right? Turns out, he was a con artist and he didn’t. And now he’s coming after me for all my money.”

After the couple filed for divorce in 2016, they endured an ugly legal battle over spousal support and assets, with Isaacs requesting a whopping $100,000 a month. By the end, however, a judge ordered Blige to pay up $30,000 a month in support payments. Reflecting on the chaos from her days in court, Blige said she’s learned how to move on. “When you come out of something like that, you realize you were never the one,” she said. “There was someone else that was his queen. I got played. I got suckered. I have to keep smiling and keep my spirits up because this is designed to kill me.”

Smiling may do the trick, but the singer’s latest album, Strength of a Woman, was probably an additional form of therapy. The project, which was released back in April, addresses a number of different themes, including lost love, self-confidence and more.
