Meghan Markle and Mariah Carey Chop It Up About The Struggles Of Being A Mixed
Meghan Markle has a fresh new episode of her Spotify podcast Archetypes, and she’s chatting with the Queen of Chrismas, Mariah Carey.
According to People, Carey revealed to Markle due to moving around so much when she was younger. It was hard for her to adjust and fit in.
“I didn’t fit in,” the ‘Obsessed’ singer expressed.
“I didn’t fit in. You know, it would be more of the Black area of town, or then you could be where my mom chose to live, were the more the white neighborhoods. And I didn’t fit in anywhere at all.”
The ladies have a more complex conversation about being biracial, with Markle referencing a Halle Berry interview where the Oscar-winner was asked about being mixed race. Markle continues, sharing that she’s not treated as a Black or White woman due to being a lighter tone Black woman, feeling she fits “in-between.”
“I had read this article about Halle Berry, and they were asking her how she felt being treated as a mixed-race woman in the world,” Markle began.
“And her response was her saying, ‘Well, your experience through the world is how people view you.’ So she said because she was darker in color, she was being treated as a Black woman, not a mixed woman. And I think it’s very different for us because we’re light-skinned. You’re not treated as a Black woman. You’re not treated as a white woman. You sort of fit in between. I mean, if there’s any time in my life that it’s been more focused on my race, it’s only once I started dating my husband. Then I started to understand what it was like to be treated like a Black woman. Because up until then, I had been treated like a mixed woman. And things shifted.”
Carey chimed in, sharing how she felt forced to choose between races and thought it was “okay” to say she was mixed-race.
“As a mixed woman, I always thought it should be okay to say I’m mixed. Like it should be okay to say that. But people want you to choose,” she shared.
Markle’s next guest will be Mindy Kaling.
