Five Reasons to See Jumping the Broom This Weekend
Jumping the Broom is in theaters this Friday, just in time for Mother's Day. Here, five good reasons why you should definitely support the film on its opening weekend.
1. Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is obviously a great time to spend with your family, so brunch and a movie would be appropriate. In Jumping The Broom, you will see parts of a mom you know in Loretta Divine's and Angela Basset’s respective characters. My boyfriend and I cracked up at Divine's many one-liners (Devine's character was similar to his mom, where my mom was a little more Angela Bassett, who was considered bougie). It's an all-around relatable film for you and the family.
2. Get a Fun History Lesson
Black history is every day, and seeing Jumping the Broom, for some people, is a great way to learn something new. The idea of jumping the broom is a part of African-American culture that stems from slavery. Slaves were not allowed to legally recognize their unions, thus they literally jumped over brooms to signify official matrimony. I took for granted how many people didn’t know what jumping the broom was until this film.
3. Laz Alonso
One, the man is fine. But superficial elements aside, this is his first real movie role as a leading man and he definitely delivered. This film has the potential to skyrocket his career to official leading man status along the lines of Denzel Washington. Hopefully, Hollywood power players play their cards right—as long as you support it and show them what you want to see!
4. Quality Film
I wanted to say “quality Black film,” which it is. On the other hand, everyone can enjoy it, even those who aren’t familiar with African-American culture. And to the folks who complain about the lack of quality Black films—support this movie because Jumping the Broom is the best Black wedding flick since The Best Man.
5. Good Alternative to Thor
Thor is in theaters today. The comic book action isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time. Jumping the Broom is more appropriate for the whole family and it‘s a great conversation-starter. After seeing this movie, you will be at the dinner table debating "what ifs" with your family. You’ll wonder how your relatives would behave in that situation—it’s probably better to talk it out before the drama comes!
