Hair How-To: Alicia Keys's Fab Waves
Alicia Keys stepped out to the Producers Guild Awards with an elegant head full of waves. The artist always works her dark-haired mane to perfection, going back and forth between curly and straight tresses. Her stylist, Tippi Shorter, spoke to us about the proper way to blow out curly hair.
“Someone with natural hair… I definitely wouldn’t try to use a round brush because I know that I’m going to have to follow it up with a little heat. I would use a Boars Head paddle brush to get your hair dry,” she explained to BET.com. “The focus wouldn’t be to get it straight, but to get it dry and as smooth as I can. I would follow it with a flatiron.”
Keys’s big waves can be done in a cinch. Begin styling several hours before your event. Using a very large barrel curling iron, section medium to large pieces of hair in horizontal rows and curl each row the opposite direction. Use long, flat bobby pins to pin-curl each piece as you go. This helps to lock in your curl’s shape.
Lightly spritz each section using Shorter’s go-to hairspray, Hard Head hairspray by Bed Head.
Before heading to your glam event, remove pins and finger-comb curls. Softly brush out curls and shape your waves as you go.
