The Internet Is Rallying Behind Mo’Nique After Steve Harvey Confronts Her About Being Blacklisted From Hollywood
It was previously reported that Mo'Nique and Steve Harvey had quite the spirited exchange on Harvey's daytime talk show. Now, the interview has finally made its way online, revealing the full story of what went down and prompting many to rush to Mo's defense. Here's what went down.
During an appearance on Harvey's talk show, Steve, on Wednesday, the Oscar-winning actress explained that she and her husband/manager Sidney Hicks "got labeled as difficult" for speaking up when the producers of Precious asked her to do more Oscar press for the film without pay.
"I said one word," she said. "And that was 'no.' I said no to some powerful people. I said no to Oprah Winfrey, I said no to Tyler Perry, I said no to Lee Daniels and I said no to Lionsgate."
The Blackbird star then went on to stress that each person she named reassured her that she was in the right when making the bold decision.
"The difficulty came when people that look like me, like Oprah, Tyler, Lee Daniels — and I gotta put my brother Steve [Harvey] on this list — y'all knew I was not wrong," she continued. "Each one of you said to me, 'Mo'Nique, you're not wrong.'"
Mo'Nique added that she felt betrayed when Harvey supported her privately, but then publicly criticized her for the decision. "When you went on the air and said, 'My sister burned too many bridges and there's nothing I can do for her now,' do you know how hurt I was?"
In an attempt to defend his previous words, Harvey responded by claiming he thought she "went about it wrong" and felt she had done herself "a disservice by the way she chose to go about it."
While their exchange seemed to progress calmly at first, things quickly escalated.
When Harvey said he was sorry they were arguing, Mo'Nique responded: "We're not arguing," she said. "You and your sister, we're having a conversation... and I'm getting ready to punch you in your mouth. Bam, bam! I have to understand how to agree to disagree without being upset. That's the thing: I disagree with my brother. I'm not upset with you. I love you. I disagree with the way Oprah, Lee and Tyler did it, but I love them."
Those who viewed the exchange grew extremely bothered, though, when Harvey claimed "this is the money game" while adding that due to their race, they have to present themselves in a way that is most "profitable."
"When you tell the truth, you have to deal with the repercussions of the truth," he said. "We Black out here. We can't come out here and do it any way we want to. Your husband can't be the Sidney that he really is out here... This is the money game. This ain't a Black man's game. This ain't a white man's game. This is the money game!"
Mo'Nique quickly interjected by adding, "Before the money game, it's called the integrity game. And we've lost the integrity worried about the money."
