Trayvon Martin's Parents in Talks With Publishers for Book
The parents of Trayvon Martin are shopping a book that will tell their son's full story and their family's experiences since his death in February 2012. Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin met with book publishers this week in meetings that were "somber and moving," two publishers said, according to the New York Times.
It has been nearly two years since Trayvon was killed by volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder charges in July 2013.
Fulton and Martin say they have not had the chance to give details on their experiences since the incident. The book may also tie in social issues of race and religion. Trayvon's death has led them to become advocates for U.S. gun control reform, particularly wanting to overturn Florida's "Stand Your Ground" laws.
Separately, Zimmerman is currently selling an original painting of an American flag on eBay. As of Tuesday, the highest bid is nearly $100,000. Zimmerman has had several brushes with the law for speeding, accusations of assault and a domestic dispute against his live-in girlfriend, since the trial. He owes his defense attorneys about $2.5 million.
"I found a creative, way to express myself, my emotions and the symbols that represent my experiences," Zimmerman writes. "My art work allows me to reflect, providing a therapeutic outlet and allows me to remain indoors :-)"
