Report: Deron Williams Seeking Release From Nets to Join Mavericks

Point guard wants to leave Brooklyn to play for hometown Dallas.

Deron Williams wants out of Brooklyn to get some home cooking.

That's what NBA insiders are telling ESPN about the former All-Star point guard. Williams is trying to negotiate a release from the Brooklyn Nets so that he could ink a deal with his hometown Dallas Mavericks.

With two years and a whopping $43.3 million remaining on Williams's contract, the Nets can either try to come to terms with the point guard for a possible buyout or waive the 31-year-old veteran.

Doing the former would allow the Nets to pay out Williams's remaining salary over the next five seasons to lower their luxury tax. But the Nets have been hesitant about doing that in the past and even if they have a change of heart, it would need to be done before the August 31 deadline.

Sources tell ESPN that there's mutual interest between the Mavs and Nets, considering Dallas's experiment with Rajon Rondo was a disaster late last season and they're in need of a point guard after Monta Ellis left as well. Losing DeAndre Jordan to the Los Angeles Clippers also makes the Mavs' hunger for talent that much greater. Meanwhile, a move back home to Dallas could be the fresh start that D. Will needs.

Williams averaged 13.3 points and 6.6 assists per game for the Nets last season, shooting a career-worst 38.7 percent from the field. Overall, Williams's four seasons with the Nets have been underwhelming and his comments about not feeling like a New Yorker last year don't exactly help his cause.

In addition to Williams, the Nets are also on the hook for small forward Joe Johnson for nearly $25 million next season and that's another contract the franchise would like to unload.
