Protests in LA After Cop Is Reportedly Cleared in Ezell Ford's Death
Protesters camped outside of Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti's home Sunday night following reports that LAPD's Independent Inspector General and Police Chief had found a police officer justified in killing Ezell Ford, an unarmed African-American man.
The Los Angeles mayor says that the Police Commission will still have a say in whether the officers involved were right and that they would "conduct an impartial and fair-minded review."
He added that he reached out to Ford's mother to express his sympathy and was hoping to speak with her face-to-face on the killing in the next few days. "I didn't reach her but left a message, telling her my heart goes out to her and her grieving family, as it has since the news first broke last August," Garcetti said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The demonstration was organized by members of the Black Lives Matter movement. They are demanding that the police chief be fired and for the Police Commission to be transparent about their investigation into the case.
The shooting of Ford occurred after police stopped him in the Florence neighborhood of South Los Angeles last August. Ford was described as having a mental illness and was unarmed during the encounter with police.
Protesters left messages on the sidewalk of Mayor Garcetti's home and photos of Ford as of Monday morning, the Times reports.
