You Won't Believe How Far Hollywood Went to Make Scarlett Johansson Not Look White

Way too far.

It's no secret that Hollywood casting can be extremely controversial — just look at the entire cast of this year's Gods of Egypt. Now, eyes are turning to Scarlett Johansson being cast as Major Motoko Kusanagi, a Japanese character, in the upcoming Hollywood film Ghost in the Shell

The Japanese fan base of the anime film, as well as screenwriters, took to the internet to express their disgust with the casting. According to Kotaku, My Game News Flash, one of Japan's biggest game blogs, had the most explosive comments surrounding Johansson's feature in the film, and interestingly enough, they weren't all against it.

"The gap between Japan and abroad is interesting," one commenter wrote. "Japan: A white person is OK, right? Abroad: We won't forgive white-washing, cast an Asian person."

Another commenter wrote, "Japanese people don't really care, and that's really depressing."

Then there was this commenter who chose to keep it short and sweet: "White people rule Hollywood."

Max Landis, a popular screenwriter known for working on films like Chronicle and American Ultra, took to YouTube to explain what he thought of the casting.

"The only reason to be upset about Scarlett Johansson being in Ghost in the Shell is if you don't know how the movie industry works," he said, adding there were no "A-list female Asian celebrtities" who were capable of getting a major Hollywood film off the ground in 2016.

After folks on the internet accused him of defending Johansson's casting, he took to Twitter to rebut those claims.

"NO I F*****G DON'T [defend it]," he tweeted. "I list it as a PART OF A BROKEN SYSTEM that F***S OVER ACTORS AND MINORITIES."

What do you think of the casting?
